1 in 20 Café – The Basin

More than just a place to grab a coffee, 1 in 20 Café is a local favourite built on passion, quality, and a genuine love for bringing people together.
From catering to café
For Alison and David, the journey to opening 1 in 20 Café started with a need for a commercial kitchen for Alison’s established catering business. But the idea didn’t stop there.
“Since we love coffee just as much as food, we thought, why not build a café too?” Alison shares.
With Alison’s background as a qualified chef and David’s expertise in IT and construction, they combined their skills to launch the café in November 2020, right in the middle of Melbourne’s lockdowns. David even took on the challenge of personally building out the café’s interior, turning their vision into a reality.
What sets 1 in 20 café apart?
The menu is crafted by experienced chefs who are dedicated to using only fresh ingredients and high-quality produce. There are no shortcuts and no pre-packaged meals, just carefully prepared dishes made with passion.
Their coffee is expertly brewed, with baristas personally trained by The Bean Cartel to ensure every cup is made to perfection, exactly as it was meant to taste.
A great place to work & visit – Whether you’re dropping in for a quick takeaway, catching up with friends, or setting up with your laptop for a productive morning, the café is designed to be welcoming and versatile.
A café built on good vibes & great people
While the coffee and food are a huge draw, Alison and David know that it’s their amazing team that keeps customers coming back.
“We’d love to say people come for the best coffee and food, but really, it’s our staff,” David says. “Customers always comment on how friendly and fun our team is, and as business owners, that’s the biggest compliment.”
Why The Basin?
For Alison and David, location is everything. They live just around the corner, so choosing a café spot that connected them to their local community was a no-brainer. With rolling hills on one side and farmland on the other, plus a park across the road that hosts The Basin Music Festival, it’s a setting that’s both scenic and vibrant.
“Our customers feel like an extended friend group now,” they say. “We love being a part of this suburb.”
Big plans for outdoor spaces
Alison and David are always thinking of ways to improve the experience for their customers.
Their next goal? Creating an outdoor space with bike racks and seating to make the café even more inviting for cyclists, pet owners, and those who love to sit outside.
They’re always striving to improve, never taking their staff or customers for granted. So next time you’re in The Basin, drop in, grab a coffee, and experience the care, craft, and community that makes 1 in 20 Café one of a kind.
