For over 16 years, Mountain Gate Essential Homewares has been a beloved part of the Mountain Gate Shopping Centre community. Owned and operated by Queeny, this local gem has built a reputation for providing an incredible range of affordable products while fostering meaningful connections with customers. 

A business rooted in community needs 

When Queeny took over the store in 2009, Mountain Gate Shopping Centre was home to three thriving $2 shops, bustling with foot traffic from local residents. Seeing the strong demand for everyday essentials, she set out to create a store that would meet those needs while offering an exceptional shopping experience. 

Many of her customers, especially elderly residents, love that they can walk to the store and find everything they need without having to drive. Over the years, she has built lasting relationships with her customers, many of whom have become dear friends. 

A treasure trove of essentials 

 Mountain Gate Essential Homewares is more than just a typical variety store. It is a thoughtfully curated space where customers can find everything they need under one roof, from practical household necessities to fun and unique treasures. The store features an extensive range of items, including gifts, party supplies, greeting cards, gift bags, decorations, home essentials, small appliances, toys, stationery, treats and accessories for furry friends, as well as tools and DIY essentials. 

With over a thousand items in stock, Queeny has an uncanny ability to help customers locate exactly what they need. In fact, customers often ask, “Do you really know where every product is?” Her proud response? “Of course, I do!” 

Customers who feel like family 

Queeny’s commitment to her customers goes beyond transactions, focusing instead on building relationships. One heartwarming story involves an Italian grandmother who frequently visited the shop to buy wool. Over time, she knitted a beautiful blanket for Queeny and often brought her fresh fruits from her garden. It’s these small, meaningful interactions that make running the store such a joy. 

Mountain Gate Essential Homewares has also gained a reputation as the best $2 shop in Melbourne, with customers traveling from as far as Dandenong just to find specialty items like TV antennas—products they can’t find anywhere else!
